State and religion-competing centres of power

$

When rulers obsessed with power and addicted to “lording it over us” realise that “organised religion” represents another centre of power , they want a share of it, in fact a big bite of it, want to invade it and take possession of it, “control-freaks” that they are.

Their approach is quite clever. They don’t wage war against the churches to try and destroy them — they know they can’t — but they take the church in a loving embrace so as to squeeze all life out of it. They try to pretend to be obedient followers of religion so that the religious people are obedient them and their kingdom as well.

Rulers and their henchmen, bodyguards and “praise singers” (disguised as Press officers) like to appear at religious functions and present themselves to the faithful as belonging to them even if they have to put on white gowns to make the point. In case people find this difficult to believe there are always armed guards around to suggest forcefully, “You had better, or else . . .”

In ancient times there were “priest kings” in Egypt and Babylon, and the Roman Emperor was worshipped as a divine being, religion serving as a prop for political power. In our day dictators turn themselves into cult figures, and even elected leaders present themselves carrying Bibles to get the Bible readers’ vote.

During these days after Christmas we are confronted with a very interesting text from the Bible. Some learned scholars arrive in Jerusalem and look for the “newborn King of the Jews” in the palace of King Herod — where else? In fact they find him in Bethlehem in the arms, not of a princess, but of an ordinary girl; her husband is a carpenter, and they have found a roof over their heads in very modest surroundings.

King Herod’s paranoid suspicion causes a bloodbath as he tries to eliminate the baby who threatens his royal throne. As a matter of fact, as a grown man Jesus, though a descendant of King David, will have nothing to do with this kind of kingship. He will call another Herod 30 years later “this fox”.

The prophets before Jesus were no enthusiastic royalists. Samuel warned the people of Israel against having a king. “He will take your sons and daughters as slaves and steal your fields,” he told them ( cf. 1 Samuel 8: 10 ff.). David seemed a good king: at least he repented when he took Bathsheba and had her husband killed. His descendants committed much bigger crimes without repenting.

Jesus did not want to fight the Romans for political power. When they wanted to make him a king “he withdrew again to the mountain alone” (John 6: 15). He taught, “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” (Mark 12 : 17). Caesar’s empire and the kingdom of God are two different things and are ruled by different principles. Caesar must never try and control God’s kingdom.

Jesus’ followers will one day tell the authorities in Jerusalem, “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5: 29). Christians are no anarchists (Rom. 13: 1), but in a conflict situation they follow God’s laws. The early Christians paid with their lives for their refusal to worship Caesar. They never forgot that Jesus does not approve of autocrats, “the kings of the Gentiles who lord it over them” (Luke 22: 25). He wants servant leadership, leaders who spend themselves in working for their people and the common good. As he did himself: he never lived in a palace, and he rode on a donkey, not a war horse.

If rulers want to be compared to Jesus they have to make a dramatic U-turn. They have to face the truth, past and present, and learn to heal rather than strike wounds, to reconcile with their enemies rather than indulge in hate speech, and to overcome their addiction to power, indeed, when the time has come, to let go of power altogether.

But let church leaders also be warned: if politicians are not to “co-opt” the church for their purposes, you must not rule as they do either!

‘Makandiwa to raise the dead’

United Family International Church (UFIC) founder, Emmanuel Makandiwa is “waiting for a few instructions from God” to begin raising people from the dead, one of his top aides claimed Sunday.

“In fact he (Makandiwa) said he is waiting for instructions from God to do it publicly as he has done it before,” said Makandiwa’s spokesperson Prime Kufa.

Quizzed on where he had done such an act before, Kufa said: “We have evidence and examples, one in Muzarabani where he raised a young man when he (Makandiwa) was still in Bible College although I am not sure when exactly.”

Kufa’s revelation follows an article written by his church mate Jealous Mawarire in a local weekly where he claimed “the Man of God” had told congregants at a New Year’s Day teaching that he would soon embark on the ground breaking miracle crusade.

Mawarire wrote: “Speaking before his main teaching on January 1 2014, prophet Makandiwa said: “We are still waiting for a few instructions from God so that we can bring a few corpses from mortuaries and raise them. Obviously we would prefer people who would have been dead for two weeks or more, so that people will know that the God we serve is the God of the Bible.”

Early last year Makandiwa, exasperated by criticism of “his miracles”, allegedly dared doubting Thomases to a “sprint” on Lake Kariba.

Kufa at the time told the media the “man of God did not directly challenge anyone,” but was not amused by people who doubted him.

“All he said was people should not doubt miracles. They just need to believe and anything is possible even walking on water.

“He said if people are saying he is using evil spirits then they should come and be witnesses to his works or offer deliverance. He said God is able to make him walk on water if needs be so that his critics can believe,” Kufa said then.

Makandiwa always sends tongues wagging with his “miraculous deeds.” Makandiwa has consistently told his followers to brace for more miracles declaring “people with disabilities will be healed, bald heads will grow hair while those who lost their teeth will develop new ones.”

He normally quotes from the Book of Jeremiah 33v3 which reads: “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”

Last year Makandiwa said the miracles were meant for people who doubted his ability to perform supernatural wonders.

Ashdown Park residents on Monday threatened to stop the construction of a 200 000 seater church which is being constructed by a local Christian denomination Heartfelt International ministries saying congregates were disturbing peace in the area through the use of modern technologies while they were asleep.

Followers of the Heartfelt International ministries church which is constructing the multi-million dollars conference centre at Ashdown Park shopping centre use public announcement system when conducting their services in the building.

Residents told RelZim Tuesday that the PA system the church uses disturbs their sleep especially at night.

“We are not opposed to the construction of this church here because we know that it is an investment which has come to our area. What we demand is that he church should consider that there are people in its neighbourhood by just reducing the volume of their PA system”, said one resident.

“We are all Christians and we all want churches to be built in our areas. These people should stop using the church until it has been completed and if they do that we will not be bothered,”Tamuka Kahwema a local resident voiced.

“If they continue doing this we are going to block them from operating from here. We have been for a long time trying to engage them in a civilized manner but they seem not to listern,”complained another resident.

RelZim approached two officials of the Church which is believed to be led by one Tavona Vutaunashe who refused to comment.

Lancelot Mudavanhu the area’s local councilor confirmed receiving the complaint from residents.

“We have since advised the church to first complete the building so that the noise coming from the PA system is contained. It is our hope that they are going to act accordingly”, said Mudavanhu.

Harare West legislator Jessie Majome last week visited the area and addressed the residents.

At the meeting Majome urged the two parties to engage each other amicably and reach a common ground.

Gumbura women trial kicks off

The trial of eight women linked to Independent End Time Message founder, Robert Martin Gumbura, kicked off at the Harare Magistrates Court yesterday.

The eight face allegations of contravening the Censorship and Entertainment Control Act after they were allegedly caught in possession of pornographic materials.

The trial was held before Magistrate Vakai Chikwekwe.

The eight women; Amadeus Mutakwa (32), Pamela Kandawire (27), Veronica Mbanga (27), Tendai Kwatara (34) , Moreblessing Takawira (35), Runyararo Musvosvi (27), Choice Negaye (32) and Rutendo Mandiya (28) were granted $300 bail each in December by the Harare Magistrates Court.

Their arrest came after police received reports of child abuse at number 6 Helena Close, Malborough.

Acting on the tip off, police raided the residence and recovered 16 pornographic DVDs and 57 photographs of the eight women posing nude.

State witness, Assistant Inspector Tichaona David Sengwe identified three of the women whose pictures were brought in court as exhibit.

The eight however denied the charges saying it was the work of adversaries bent on tarnishing Gumbura’s name.

The defence counsel alleged that police failed to execute their duty in a diligent manner as some of the pictures do not reflect faces of the accused persons.

Gumbura himself is facing nine counts of rape for allegedly raping six female congregates of his church.

Gumbura however denies the charges saying he had consensual sex with the women from his church.

Celebrity prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa’s United Family International (UFI) Church in Bulawayo is in trouble after the Messenger of Court seized some of its property over an undisclosed debt.

In the event that the church fails to pay its dues today, the seized property is likely to go under the hammer tomorrow at CIPF Complex in the city.

Property attached by the Messenger of Court includes various household goods to recover a debt owed to Rosemary Hepworth.

UFI spokesperson pastor Prime Kufa said the church was only caught in a crossfire because the property belongs to someone called Ntuthuko Nyathi who is allegedly not a member of the church.

“As a church we were not aware of this, but after consultations, our pastor resident in Bulawayo said the church once rented the premises and the name was not changed after the pastor who was residing in the property left,” Kufa said.

“Soon after he left the house, it was then occupied by Nyathi who failed to settle his dues with the complainant and he was taken to court resulting in us as the church being caught in the crossfire because we did not change the name when we vacated the premises,” he said.

Makandiwa is suspected to be one of the richest people in Zimbabwe and he is currently building a multi-million dollar state-of-the-art church in Chitungwiza.

An estimated 10 000 people attend his sermons every week.

Chinamasa brews storm over Makandiwa remarks

Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa’s dig at United Families International Church founder Emmanuel Makandiwa has torched a storm with some people accusing the minister of seeking to divert the nation’s attention from his failure to turnaround the economy.

The storm follows Chinamasa’s remarks during the Mandel/Gordon Institute of Business Science 2014 Economic Outlook Symposium in Harare on Wednesday where he warned Zimbabweans against banking on miracles performed by Makandiwa for a shift in their economic fortunes.

The NewsDay website and other social media platforms were yesterday flooded with comments, with some readers accusing contemporary preachers of pushing the gospel of miracles at the expense of hard work through which people should accrue wealth.

Donald Muzondo observed that Chinamasa was right in that the Bible encouraged hard work, but some church goers were being “brainwashed into believing there are short cuts to life which is absolutely not true”.

However, Elsara Banda accused Chinamasa of attempting to blame his government’s economic management failures on Makandiwa, whose church he said was not responsible for crafting the country’s National Budget.

Chinamasa, according to Habbakuk Muzezewa, was not best placed to lecture Zimbabweans about hard work.

“The people of Zimbabwe don’t need to be lectured on hard work. It’s in their DNA, but the same cannot be said about the country’s leaders,” he said.

Another reader Better Trinity Maridza said he would rather “follow a man of God than greedy, selfish and proud politicians”.

Prophets, according to Kevin Musekiwa, were raised to bring hope to the country and if the prophets were fraudulent, God would deal with them.

Love Chapfika accused modern–day church leaders of turning themselves into demigods from a different planet.

Enock Nkonde noted that Makandiwa’s church was looking after many orphans and widows, something the government had dismally failed to do.

A reader, who identified himself as Brandon, said Chinamasa should stop blaming pastors because they were not responsible for running the country. “Stop the blaming of pastors because they don’t run the country.

People prefer to go to church to learn about life principles unlike you who go to rallies and learn how to kill, hate and loot,” he fumed.

Alois Mathuthu said the government was to blame because its populist economic policies have led to the closure of companies and factories, leaving thousands of people jobless.

Centre preserves mbira heritage

Zimbabwe is set to hold a mbira festival later this year courtesy of Mbira Centre.  This was revealed by Mbira Centre director Albert Chimedza during a tour of the facility by Secretary for Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, George Charamba on Tuesday.

Chimedza said that he hopes to bring together mbira players from all corners of the country and beyond. He is also confident that the younger generations will be well-represented.

“We have been doing a lot of research, archiving and developing of the mbira since the centre was founded years ago. This will be the first time that a mbira festival of any significance will be held in the country,” Chimedza enthused.

However, he was quick to point out that the project needs corporate, State and individual buy-in to succeed.

“There is going to be the need for a lot of money in order to bring in the players from all over and other logistics. So without corporate, Government and individual support, we can never do it. But I am sure that there are many Zimbabweans who are keen to work towards preserving and developing our national heritage.”

Chimedza said the centre is currently setting up a programme whereby mbiras will be taught in school, so that a new breed of Zimbabwean musicians will grow up with the instrument.

“Western music is taught to kids from an early age. This gives them time to master it and transcend to great heights by the time they are in their early twenties. So if you have a  person only learning the instrument at that stage it is too late for them to become real masters.”

He said ten schools have been identified and the instruments are already being produced at the centre. The mbiras are made of steel keys fastened to a wooden base with the unit enclosed in a resonator during playing.

“The marimba was successfully introduced in schools in the last century and it has enjoyed world-wide fame and you now get marimba bands in places like Canada, USA and Botswana. Why can we not do the same with the mbira?

“I hope to see the likes of Stunner and Winky D using the mbira in their music very soon. All we need is a system where musicians can learn about it just like for any other instrument so that they can then put their personal touch on it.”

Famous mbira musicians in Zimbabwe include the iconic late Sekuru Gora who was an internationally acclaimed star who held shows as far afield as Germany.

Mbuya Stella Chiweshe is another earlier generation mbira maestro who has made it onto the international stage. Hope Masike is a young musician who has bucked the urban grooves trend and also enjoys international acclaim as mbira player.

Just recently gospel musician Fungisai Zvakavapano has turned to the mbira to rejuvenate her sounds.

The Mbira Centre which is situated along Glenara Road in Highlands was founded several years ago and is run by Albert and his wife Antonella. Chimedza has designed a chromatic mbira which can play any music.

The mbira is a traditional African key music instrument whose history dates back more than 1 000 years and is indigenous to several countries including Angola, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

Bulawayo Gospel Music on the rise

The year 2013 was a defining time for gospel music in the City of Kings as fans have shown maturity by supporting local artistes.

Many groups have sprouted adding to the already existing ones, although gospel artistes from other cities have continued to gather massive crowds.

Groups such as Family Voices, Vocal Extraordinaire (Vocal Ex) and Cream Voices continue to draw reasonable crowds in the city having performed at the prestigious National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA)
alongside nationally acclaimed artistes.

Gospel rookie and dancer, Dumi Nyongola Nkomo, who has staged shows in Botswana and South Africa is elated by the support from local fans.

“They are crazy about my music, dances, and genre. My church is very supportive, I have no complains when it comes to how my music has fared so far,” a visibly excited Nkomo told RelZim on the sidelines of a gospel concert held last week.

Old gospel fans recall names such as Freedom Sengwayo, Christabel of the Zvikomborero fame and the late Revonia Khumalo, but the new crop of artistes look poised to surpass their predecessors.

Joyous Celebration star Mkhululi Bhebhe ,one of the most celebrated gospel artistes in city said gospel artistes in the city should stand up and be counted amid challenges facing the industry.

“I think this is the time to make a difference in our own city. We shouldn’t depend on foreign artistes to come and uplift our music. We have to show that Bulawayo has the talent and restore it to its original state,” Bhebhe said in an interview recently.

“That same love that people have for the South African music is the same heart I want to restore for Bulawayo music,” Bhebhe added.

Vocal Ex leader, Eric Moyo said he was determined to develop the genre in the city.

“I love Bulawayo and I think this is a place where we can step out to show the world what we can do,” Moyo said.

Bulawayo has hosted gospel giants like South Africa’s Solly Mahlangu, Sifiso Ncwane, the Fishers of Men and Mathias Mhere, but local artistes have had a fair share.

ACCZ exonerates El Bethel Church

The Apostolic Christian Council of Zimbabwe (ACCZ) has exonerated El-bethel Tabernacle Ministries Church after allegations of sexual abuse, engineering forced marriages and equipping junior pastors with martial arts skills to deal with perceived wayward congregants were levelled against the Church.

El-bethel, located in Chitungwiza is on record denying the allegations saying they were coming from disgruntled ex-communicated members.

Following the allegations, ACCZ president Archbishop Johannes Ndanga, organised a probe team that was tasked with investigating the authenticity of the claims.

The probe team was led by Bishop Joseph Pagan’a.

Presenting the findings of the probe team on Wednesday, Pagan’a said: “At the time of the visit by the ACCZ, there were no victims of sexual abuse and there were no reports of issues to that effect. Those interviewed said there was nothing of that sort.

“El Bethel believes in polygamy but does not engage in forced marriages. ACCZ established that Doctor Munawa (leader of the Church) trains karate as an individual and is training at Raylton Sports club.”

Ndanga said that the issue could have been a result of some people within the church trying to settle vendettas.

“We have reasons to believe that it is a mischievous and deliberate attempt to soil the names of God fearing people who are preaching their conviction as per their constitutional rights to freedom of religion and conscience.

“ACCZ has gone as far as visiting El Bethel Church premises and no sign of a gymnasium was found for the alleged training of martial arts,” said Ndanga.

Pius Ncube fumes over Gukurahundi prayer ban

Defrocked Roman Catholic Archbishop Pius Ncube on Saturday expressed dismay over police action to ban the Gukurahundi commemoration prayers slated for the Baptist Church in Bulawayo.

Ibetshu Likazulu, organisers of the event had invited Ncube to grace the occasion to remember an estimated 20 000 civilians who died during the Midlands and Matabeleland Gukurahundi era in the 80’s.

The same function of this magnitude was banned last year with police citing potential violence if the event was to take off.

When RelZim arrived at the scene Ncube confronted the police over their ‘questionable’ decision to ban the event.

“How can you ban our meeting with God, What has become of this country,” fumed Ncube.

Soon after that the scuffle, Ncube briefly held a prayer meeting outside the venue and refused to talk to journalists.

Two police officers in plain clothes pounced on the people who had gathered outside the church waiting for the commencement of the event dubbed the Gukurahundi Memorial Prayers.

The organisers’ spokesperson Mbuso Fuzwayo said the police ordered a halt to the event citing potential violence.

“The prayer meeting could not go ahead as police have banned it arguing we wanted to plan a demonstration,” Fuzwayo said.

“They also accused us of conniving with political parties to revolt against the government which to us its malice and an excuse to frustrate our efforts to remember our fallen heroes. As you can see police are here and have told us to disperse, there are also still interrogating some of our members,” Fuzwayo added.

He said the move by the police was meant to frustrate a noble cause of remembering the fallen civilians and undemocratic denial of freedom of assembly as entrenched in the Constitution.

As people kept flocking to the venue, police in riot gear was dispatched almost an hour later to disperse people as well as maintain order.

Former minister of national healing and reconciliation Moses Mzila Ndlovu said the government was insensitive towards national healing issues.

He said for Zimbabwe to fully heal from the atrocities, there was need for truth and respect of such events.

Witch-hunter’s antics cause confusion, disbelief at Chihera

The community at Chichera farm near Old Marlborough suburb has been left in a state of confusion, awe and disbelief following the invasion of the area by a self-proclaimed witch-hunter, who claims to be unearthing tools used for sorcery.

The self-proclaimed witch-hunter, Morius Mbofana, popularly known as Sekuru Maguranyanga has been causing stir in the area for the past two weeks where he is claiming to be carrying out witch-hunting and cleansing exercises at the invitation of locals.

Standardcommunity last week attended a meeting where a number of farm dwellers who were allegedly “caught” with tools of magic confessed and asked for forgiveness from the community.

“I was caught with a snake which was in a bag in my bed room. The snake belongs to me,” said an elderly man identified only as Matibhiri.

Said another man who requested anonymity: “I was keeping a charm which I was using to lure women and Sekuru fished it out of my pants during the cleansing ceremony.”

A young woman who was standing next to her husband said Sekuru Maguranyanga discovered a mouse which the witch-hunter argued was sucking blood from her three months old son.

“I do not know how that thing ended up in my house but Sekuru said it belongs to me. I am really confused,” she said.

John Ojesi, who is the farm workers’ leader, said they indeed invited the witch-hunter upon the request of the community.

“I can confirm that Sekuru Maguranyanga is a genuine traditional healer. We invited him after vetting his papers and made sure that he is a true member of Zinatha. He is doing wonders, and the whole community is happy with what he is doing,” he said.

He however said a few villagers had their misgivings over the conduct of the witch-hunter.

“We have had a few incidences where some members of the community have said they do not want the witch-hunter to visit them because of their religion, but generally things are taking shape. There is no one who has been forced to take part in Sekuru Maguranyanga’s dealings,” he said.

The witch-hunter sensationally “unearthed” magic which he claimed was being used by some local men to be intimate with women without their knowledge (mubobobo).

Women need to define their role in church

$

The church is grossly misleading people under the guise of religion and women, who form the majority of worshippers, are almost always on the receiving end culminating in emotional abuse and in worst cases, rape.

One Robert Martin Gumbura is waiting judgement on January 24 in a case that he is accused of raping seven women from his RMG Independent End Time Message church.

The church today delights in the sheepish, the led and gullible believer. A believer who does not question authority is every pastor’s dream. A submissive follower is the shepherd’s right hand man and if he is generous with his pocket, the man of God will draw close to him. Some pastors will declare blessings and honour upon believers who stand up for their messages, no matter how gross or horrible.

A believer who can sacrifice in order to bring all the comforts to the man of God is the favoured member of the flock.

Because they occupy positions of authority, people give their church leaders some reverence and in the process their mindset is shaped by the messages they get from authority. By not questioning the motive behind certain messages, congregations fall prey to some cunning pastors. Some messages are designed to make women feel vulnerable and helpless. They become easy prey for sex predators in churches.

Women need to define their role in a church set up. After all, they form the majority of worshippers in most churches. Women must form serious ministries within the church and learn to empower each other, to stand up for each other. If they allow themselves to be decorators and entertainers, nobody will take them seriously.

Women should also know how much of private information they must share with the pastor in case somebody takes advantage of their emotional instability to abuse them.

The church must also be wary of motivational speakers who have invaded churches under our watch. Sadly today’s Christians are more than happy to egg on a motivational speaker masquerading as a pastor as he jumps and thumps the pulpit with abandon.

It is well and good that they groom, counsel and preach to their congregation, but a service is not a grooming session. People are in church for the word of God, they want their spirits to be fed, they want their burdens to be lifted, they want their inner wounds to be healed by the word. Let the church teach the word. Let the church encourage hard work and not laziness.

The Bible says in 2 Thessalonians 3 verses 10-12 [NIV]:“For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat. We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive.

They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat.” Yet some “men of God” are claiming to deliver miraculous money reflecting as fat bank accounts. The faithful are hoping to wake up as landlords, drivers and having three-day miracle babies.

Women no longer need to wait for nine months to bear children! And the dead shall be brought back to life, “soon.” The believers, particularly women should strive to work hard, freebies are normally paid for in kind.

Some messages are designed to compel you to give to the church “as what you give will be equal in measure to what you will reap.”

Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa said the US dollars is going to be in circulation for the next five years and my suspicion is pastors and numerous new ministries are making hay while the sun shines. It is time the faithful went back to the basics of worship. People should not go to church for miracles, but that their inner beings be edified by the word of God. More women should take up pastoral work with a view to protecting fellow women.

Man claiming to be Jesus causes stir

The Bulawayo man, Abdullah Ncube, who has caused a storm by claiming to be  the reincarnated Jesus Christ, was Sunday morning jeered by Entumbane residents who called him a false prophet after he took his ‘crusade’ to the suburb, warning that heaven was not for the ‘uncircumcised.’

Last Sunday, the self-proclaimed son of God escaped lynching by an angry mob at Nkulumane’s Sekusile shopping centre in the city after he locked himself up at a garage in a nearby house. He was eventually saved by anti-riot police who dispersed the crowd that had already destroyed a brickwall surrounding the house, baying for his blood.

Later during the week, Ncube, who some psychologists have recommended for a psychiatric examination and confinement to an institution for the mentally ill for treatment, yesterday took his act to Nhliziyo shopping centre, attracting scores of residents, most of whom were not amused by his ‘sermon’.

“Don’t take the law into your hands,” Ncube thundered to the crowd as it became restive with some young people threatening to beat the daylights out of him.  “Wherever I preach, there are journalists and police so don’t be violent because I will be forced to use my spiritual powers to retaliate. Verily, verily I say unto you, those who are not circumcised will not enter heaven.”

But some youths dismissed his claims even daring him to show the crowd his manhood to prove that he was, himself, circumcised.

Others also asked Ncube who was wielding his trademark stick to produce the Bible containing the ‘scriptures’ he was quoting  from but he responded by saying this would not be possible as he does  not read the Bible.

“I don’t carry any Bible. I read the Koran,” said Ncube, who was putting on a topi muslim cap.

The Koran is the central religious text of Islam, which Muslims believe to be a revelation from God.

Ironically, the Koran which Ncube claims to hold dearly, does not recognise the holy trinity of Jesus as being God’s incarnate, an idea that  he amazingly seems to espouse.

“This man should be taken to a mental institution,” said one of the residents, Thamsanqa Ncube.   “I have been listening to him but he is not making sense at all.”

The self-proclaimed prophet who hails from Filabusi says he is a father of seven with two wives, and says he has chosen to remain unemployed so that he could ‘focus on doing God’s work’.

Chiredzi pastor performs wonders

A Chiredzi pastor, who claims to have been anointed by popular Nigerian pastor TB Joshua, is making waves in the south-eastern Lowveld town where he is said to be performing breathtaking “miracles”.

The previously sleepy town is now a hive of activity with hundreds of people from all over the country flocking here to get “spiritual healing and deliverance” from pastor John Chibwe of the It Is Well Ministries.

The soft-spoken pastor uses his house along Marula Drive for healing and spiritual nurturing.

When The Standard visited the pastor’s residence recently, scores of people were seated in the garden yard, waiting for him to arrive for an afternoon “devotion”, which is part of his daily routine.

Most of the people said they had travelled from distant places after learning that Chibwe was performing healing wonders.

People from Chiredzi and other areas such as Gutu, Zaka, Chikombedzi, Masvingo, Beitbridge and Zvishavane come in droves every day to see the pastor.
Others travel all the way from Harare.

Mary Nyathi from Chikombedzi, several kilometres from the Lowveld town, said she had come to thank Chibwe for healing her 12-year-old daughter, who was paralysed.

The mother claimed the girl, who was wheelchair bound since birth, started walking last month after Chibwe prayed for her. Her daughter could now play with other “spiritual patients” in the pastor’s garden.

Chibwe, who is employed at Hippo Valley Estates as finance director, comes home for a lunch time service, much to the delight of several people who would throng his homestead everyday.

To balance his professional job and his spiritual calling, Chibwe said he conducted healing sessions during lunch time and after working hours every day.
At times, he works odd hours to help people in fulfilment of his call.

“You cannot tire when you are called by God to do his work,” said Chibwe. “A lot of people come here with different spiritual problems. I make it a point that I attend to all of them.”

The pastor said some people come to him in critical conditions, but “the power of Heaven has not let me down since I began my ministry.”

“God has never let me down. Even when seriously ill people come here, I always pray and trust that God will heal them,” Chibwe said.

“Let me be clear here, that it is not me who heals these people. It is God who uses me as his tool to heal such people.”

Chibwe said while some people went to him thinking that he could give them money, he only prayed so that God could open windows for them.

“They go without receiving a single cent from me, but they later come back thanking the Lord that they are now financially stable,” he said.

“I give some money from my own pocket as directed by the Holy Spirit. Others I give food, clothing and blankets. But of interest is that all of them confirm the working hand of the Lord.”

Chibwe, who claimed to have received the call to heal people three years ago, said his calling was mainly to help the less privileged and elderly people, in line with Jesus’ ministry while on earth.

Asked how he started, Chibwe told The Standard that he was inspired by TB Joshua after “receiving a calling to serve the people”.

He went to Nigeria to receive the anointing and TB Joshua is now his Godfather, claimed Chibwe.

He started as an evangelist preaching in different churches in Hippo Valley. In 2012, Chibwe started his own church: It Is Well Ministries, which has assemblies in Chiredzi and in Mt Pleasant, Harare.

His ministry is now called Divine Yard.

Chiredzi now resembles a place of religious pilgrimage due to Chibwe’s popularity. Lodges and other accommodation facilities are always full with people seeking Chibwe’s services.

Waiting rooms at the new bus terminus in Chiredzi have become a permanent shelter for many people who would have come to seek assistance from the man of cloth.

Some sleep in the open close to the bus terminus waiting for a chance to see Chibwe the following day while others have since constructed make-shift shelters behind the bus terminus where close to 20 families are staying.

Mothers can be seen holding newly born babies, a sign that they gave birth at the terminus.

Some of those that have erected structures at the terminus have no bus fare to travel back to their respective homes.

Jameson Tokwe (74) of Neshuro in Masvingo gets food and clothing from Chibwe every month.

“We are receiving maize-meal and other groceries from the pastor,” said Tokwe. “We cannot afford bus fare back to our homes hence we have decided to stay here.”

But Chibwe said he was not aware that there were people sleeping in the open.

It could not be independently verified if Chibwe was anointed by TB Joshua as he claimed.

‘I AM DIRECTED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT TO ASSIST’

Pastor John Chibwe, unlike many other church leaders, does not accept gifts of any kind from people he would have helped spiritually. Instead, he often provides food, clothing and money to some of those he would have “healed.”

Chibwe was however quick to point out that he does not give such material benefits to everyone but only to those who would have been “identified by the holy spirit” that they needed assistance.

He said in some instances, the Holy Spirit directed him to assist the elderly with food and clothing or paying fees for underprivileged schoolchildren.

‘My survival up to God’, Mugabe

President Robert Mugabe has attributed his long life to God. At 89 and turning 90 in just about a month, Mugabe has now outlived his two sisters and three brothers who are all late.

In his eulogy at the burial of his late sister Bridget who died on Sunday after almost four years in coma, Mugabe said he could not explain why he had survived longer than all his siblings.

“Our uncles vana Zvimba (Chief Zvimba) you might ask why she has died and why I have survived more than the others. I do not have an explanation for that It is God’s will. She (Bridget) did not die because we did not try to save her life,” said Mugabe who explained the family had done all it could to save her.

As if to confirm that he was still alive and kicking, Mugabe addressed hundreds gathered for Bridget’s funeral for more than an hour in the searing summer heat.

Rumours of Mugabe being ‘sick and on his deathbed’ had become synonymous with his annual leave, usually taken between December and end of January each year.

He appeared in public for the first time in several weeks on Sunday to mourn the death of his sister, ending speculation that he may have been bed-ridden through ‘declining health.’

Though looking dejected he showed no visible signs of ill health as he greeted senior party officials and spoke of his sister’s life.

And as with previous rounds of speculation, his handlers dismissed the rumours as baseless. Mugabe has denied that previous trips to Singapore were for prostate cancer treatment, at one time claiming he had been in the Far East for an eye cataract removal.

Meanwhile Bridget’s white casket was draped with the national flag and carried by military pall bearers after she was declared a liberation war heroine. Zanu PF administration secretary Didymus Mutasa then explained that the party leadership had met and decided that she be accorded the status.

Mugabe cut short his holiday in the Far East reportedly to attend to his dying sister. He described his last moments with Bridget.

“I visited her on Saturday and arrived as nurses packed up their staff. They had just performed a blood transfusion because doctors had said her blood level was low. I stayed for 30 minutes but she was breathing rapidly and having palpitations.

“Then on Sunday I received a call from doctors that she had passed on,” a deflated Mugabe said.

He talked about his childhood, neglect by his father for a decade and his constant altercations with white people.

“My brothers and father were christened angelic names like Gabriel (father), Michael, and Raphael. People sometimes ask me why I get angry with whites and I tell them because I am not an angel,” said a giggling Mugabe.

Makandiwa failed to save Mugabe’s sister

Pentecostal prophets including United Family International Church (UFIC), founder Emmanuel Makandiwa prayed for President Robert Mugabe’s sister Bridget Mugabe but her health continued to deteriorate.

Leo, who is President Mugabe’s nephew, told mourners at the burial of Bridget that he had begged a number of prophets to pray for Bridget, but nothing changed.

“I had to take responsibility. Makandiwa came to the hospital and all these prophets that you talk about every-day, I took them to pray for her in the hope that maybe God might perform a miracle and she would be well again.

“There is none among them who I did not,” Leo said.

Bridget died at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare Sunday after spending close to four years on a life-supporting machine.

Recently one of Makandiwa’s top aides claimed that the prophet is “waiting for a few instructions from God” to begin raising people from the dead.

“In fact he (Makandiwa) said he is waiting for instructions from God to do it publicly as he has done it before,” said Makandiwa’s spokesperson Prime Kufa.

Early last year Makandiwa, exasperated by criticism of “his miracles”, allegedly dared doubting Thomases to a “sprint” on Lake Kariba.

Meanwhile Spirit Embassy Church co-founder, Prophetess Beverly Angel, wife to flamboyant and charismatic prophet, Uebert Angel last year claimed that her church raised 24 people from the dead.

Church leaders demand stands

Church leaders here are up in arms with Kwekwe city Council after its failure to swiftly allocate church stands to over hundreds of applicants.

Founder of Twelve Apostles, Pastor Tawanda Kufakunesu, said the local authority is doing little as compared to the number of churches emerging in the city.

“Many churches are being formed as each day goes by.It is shocking if one compares the staggering number of churches emerging and the efforts being put by the local authority. The local authority is doing little and they must seriously consider this.

“Our constitution is very clear that anyone is free to establish a church. With such a provision, churches galore are going to show up on the scene and the only thing that the local authority can do is to give out stands to churches,” said Pastor Kufakunesu.

Another church leader of Word of Fire, who requested anonymity, indicated that it is now more than a year after they applied for a church stand.

“It is now more than a year after we applied for a church stand but nothing has materialised. Our prayer is that this year, the Kwekwe City Council should give us a stand,” he said.

The situation has gone out of hand forcing worshipers to worship on open spaces such as recreational parks and others resorting to worship in school buildings and houses.

A snap survey conducted by RelZim shows that three or more churches use school premises and at least one or more churches are renting from long established churches which have buildings.

Director of Works at Kwekwe City Council, Engineer John Mhike, said council has received many applicants and is in the process of allocating stands to churches.

“Many churches applied for stands and some are still applying. It may seem to take long but we are searching for convenient places where they can worship without inconveniencing residents as a result of noise,” said Mhike.

Over the years Zimbabwe has witnessed a rapid increase of emerging churches.

The power of religious indoctrination or just human gullibility?

I am reminded of those years when we were young attending Sunday School or listening to lectures on Religious and Moral education in Primary school. During those years of young age, we believed places such as Syria, Egypt, Palestine, Jerusalem and many others were special places in heaven. We only learnt later in life that these places are actually on earth and all one needs is a passport to visit them. It is also now as adults, we have learnt that these places also have political leaders and that some of them have not seen peace in a long time. We have also learnt that the places we thought were holy cities are actually befallen by war and instability. But of course, in church we still sing about the holy city of Jerusalem.

I am sure the Sunday School teachers then had it much easier, as we presented them with our blank minds, a clean slate on which to inscribe their doctrines. We were told God loves us and discouraged from questioning. We were taught to fear hell and resent Satan, so indeed we never learnt to question certain things and grew up on that one side of the religious philosophy. We learnt that every man or woman who stands in front of us preaching words of religion is the chosen one and represents holiness and, therefore, his or her authenticity should not be questioned.

Today, three decades plus of being exposed to religion, I am faced with highly questionable events of a religious nature. But it is still stuck in my mind that anything religious should not be questioned as that would be considered a sin or blasphemy before God. I am reminded of how Peter denied Jesus after Judas “sold” Him, how bad it was for Thomas to doubt that Jesus had resurrected, how callous it was for the people of Nazareth, Jesus’s home, to reject the Son of Man. It is not the rejection itself that is of concern, but its repercussions.

Still as an adult, I live in a world befallen by many problems — social and economic. And according to the men and women on the pulpit, bringing these problems to God is the only way of solving them. I never doubted the power of God in my life, but my mind is dwarfed in judging which one represents a true God. Or does it really matter what power one submits to, as long as the problem is solved?

Whatever the case may be, we learnt to submit and never to question. We learnt not to look at our problems from a realistic perspective, but from the lenses of spiritualism. We learnt that everything that is not happening in our lives is because the devil is the hindrance. That hindrance can only be cast away through prayers of different dimensions and sometimes in miracles. The human race has suddenly become timid at the whims of the spiritual men and women. Again, our minds are limited in terms of how far they can determine the source or genuineness of the spiritual men and women before us. Or does it really matter as long as one can solve one’s problems. But lines have been crossed.

In South Africa, they reported of a man of god who, two weeks ago, commanded his congregants to eat grass in order to get closer to God and as a sign that humans can survive on anything. So humans can eat anything just to be closer to God. Late reports suggest that grass may be not good for human consumption even under spiritual orders as the grass eaters fell sick after the incident.

I am sure all those congregants also knew before that grass was not good for human consumption, but still believed that grazing can be a sign of God’s power.

The leader of RMG Independent End Time Message Robert Martin Gumbura is alleged to have raped 11 women, including church members and others under his care, in the past nine years, but the recently concluded trial was conducted in respect of just seven of the women. This is despite spending many years of his life preaching against adultery, fornication and other sins. The details of Gumbura’s case again demonstrate either the lower levels of human gullibility or the power of indoctrination.

And all these summarily borders on the fallacious belief that the men of religion are always right, and their words are an instruction to man, and their power should be treated as holy and therefore not questionable.

The stories are too many to recount. For some, these cases are fulfilling biblical prophecy about the sprouting of false prophets signalling the ending of the world.

I am not convinced we can use misbehaviour to measure the nearing of the end. Perhaps these are just opportunists harvesting from the gullibility sown by the unquestionability of religion. But is this gullibility escapable given the myriad of problems which drive people to seek spiritual solutions?

But then again, there is true Christianity and the message of Grace that acknowledges the free will God has given man — where does this all come in? You tell me.

New kid on the gospel block

New kid on the gospel scene Neverson Ngoshi, who recently released a six-track compilation of inspirational gospel music, says he is ready to turn the world to trusting God alone through whatever challenges people may be facing in today’s world.

Titled Nyasha DzaMwari, the album includes tracks like the title track, Kumusha Kudenga, Nditumei, Rudo RwaMambo Jesu, Jesu Ngaarumbidzwe and Dai Waizviziva.

“Although I have made it a point to highlight the goodness of living under the grace of God in all tracks, my music will be made especially to convince and teach people to shun traditional healers of this world, who are agents of the devil disguised as helpers from our ancestors,” he said.

Ngoshi, who said he was not afraid of or shy to call a spade a spade in discrediting those he believed were agents of the devil, said it was very important for people to always stay under the guidance of the Almighty God, who was the beginner and finisher of their salvation.

He said besides being highly inspired by the music of United States-based artiste Shingisai Suluma together with that of his late uncle Edison Jakarasi who introduced him to music, his main thrust was to highlight that the grace of God was better than any other solution.

The 36-year-old musician, who grew up in Mt Darwin, said he was ushered into singing when he was in Grade 4 by his late uncle who sang with a group called Spiritual Sounds with which he assisted in producing three albums titled Mwari Samasimba, Mavanga and Nyasha.

“I was encouraged to take up music full-time by Reverend Bishop Oliver Chipunza of Flame Ministries in 2005 after he realised that I had a good voice,” Ngoshi said.

The local music industry, he said, had immeasurable talent that has been seriously affected by piracy and copycatting.

He also bemoaned the fact that foreign music seemed to get more airplay and recognition over local music which retarded growth of the industry.

“I plan to hold live shows around Zimbabwe and promote my new album. I also would like to collaborate with established musicians who have a positive message for the people like Pastor
(Charles) Charamba, Oliver Mtukudzi and Blessing Shumba to mention just a few,” he said.

Gumbura is facing nine counts of raping six female members of his church.

Mujaya said he was still compiling paperwork for the judgment.

“The verdict has been postponed to 31 January as l am still compiling paperwork to the matter,” said Mujaya.

Jonathan Murombedzi is appearing for the state.
